The Boyfriend/Cheese Dilemma

     Every once in a while one gets the urge to slap a person upside the head and tell him or her to wizen up. All my life I have looked at those girls whose entire lives revolve around their boyfriends, whose very personalities have become altered because of a new male presence in their lives, with disdain and disgust. I vowed never to let a guy turn me into a mushball, vowed to remain the cynical, bitter woman who made gagging noises every time she saw a happy couple engaging in an impromptu PDA session. I may not have been mature about it, but at least I was every bit the hardened, disillusioned cynic I was meant to, and wished to, be. Every once in a while you just want to smack some sense into someone; god knows the urge hits me several times a day. But what is a person to do when she realizes that the person she so desperately wants to smack is herself?

     There’s been a recent trend in TV ads that has me baffled. It was brought home to me most clearly on the beer commercials during the NHL playoffs. Young men are increasingly being portrayed as klutzy, moronic, sophomoric, and just plain stupid.

Terms of Endearment

     This is going to shape up to be not so much a rant as much as it will be a call to arms. That’s right, men, I recruit you all. If you are or have ever been attached you may have gotten used to referring to your significant other by those little nicknames like Sweet Pea, Sweetie Pie, Beautiful, Darling, etc. that are technically referred to as terms of endearment. My mission for you begins with a question: why don’t more guys use these terms more often in normal conversation? In any case, I am making it your duty to begin doing so more frequently! Girls will never admit to it, but secretly they love this stuff.

     All singles know that finding someone can be near impossible and feel a lot like pulling teeth—without Novocain—using rusty, loose pliers—held by a master of torture. The focus of these rants has, up to date, been my rather harsh views on why men basically suck. I want to remedy this, however, by now presenting them with a basic manual so that they might better instruct themselves in the art that is their better half…women.
