Three to Tango
Posted by Eeyore, Sep 4, 2002
As much as this may come off as a, dare I say, ‘fruity’ thing for a guy to say, it’s nice to see a nice romantic comedy once in a while. After all, one can only take so many action packed, sci-fi oriented flicks before feeling the need to “explore strange new worlds,” and “Three to Tango” doesn’t come up short.

Oscar Novak (Perry) plays a struggling but talented architect who, along with his partner Peter Steinberg (played by Platt), are putting everything they have into getting a contract to redesign a new cultural centre. Charles Newman (played by McDermott), a wealthy business mogul, decides that he will play on Oscar’s desire to have the job by enlisting him to keep safe his mistress Amy (Campbell), whom he thinks might have eyes towards her ex-beau. Of course, what Newman thinks is that Oscar is actually gay, and consequentially of no threat.
Matthew Perry does a wonderful job of juggling from gay to strait personae, from personal to business interactions, and Neve Campbell is no less exciting in her role. With the supporting cast brought up by Dylan McDermott and Oliver Platt, the character interaction just flows from the script; I also enjoyed the upbeat jazzy tunes flowing from the screen. It helped add to the carefree, quickly passing developments throughout the film.
The relationships continue to entangle with one another as Oscar and Amy begin to grow closer, but with Oscar obviously unable to reveal his true feelings, or orientation for that matter. Ok, so it sounds sappy; all you fellow guys out there are probably saying “screw this, where’s the latest Arny flick?” but let me give you a word of advice: just sit through it. Better yet, sit through it (voluntarily) with your significant other, and I guarantee that you’ll enjoy it.
