The Butterfly Effect (2004), posted Feb 5, 2004 by Hermione |
 | I've always stood by the notion that movies from which one expects very little are typically the ones to surprise the most. After having seen The Butterfly Effect, from which I expected absolutely nothing and only saw to keep a friend happy, I stand by that notion even more. The film was great, disturbing at times, but certainly one that kept me interested and guessing throughout. And who knew that Asthon Kutcher could actually act? |

Sleep No More, posted Feb 2, 2004 by Hermione |
 | Literary horror has taken the path of cinematic horror: anything recently released does not come close to comparing to the classics and tends to, well, suck. Greg Iles’ Sleep No More suffers from the same curse. It’s long, but seems longer, and aside from missing the mark at being terrifying, it is also the most boring thing you will ever read. |

The Boyfriend/Cheese Dilemma, posted Oct 28, 2003 by Hermione |
 | Every once in a while one gets the urge to slap a person upside the head and tell him or her to wizen up. All my life I have looked at those girls whose entire lives revolve around their boyfriends, whose very personalities have become altered because of a new male presence in their lives, with disdain and disgust. I vowed never to let a guy turn me into a mushball, vowed to remain the cynical, bitter woman who made gagging noises every time she saw a happy couple engaging in an impromptu PDA session. I may not have been mature about it, but at least I was every bit the hardened, disillusioned cynic I was meant to, and wished to, be. Every once in a while you just want to smack some sense into someone; god knows the urge hits me several times a day. But what is a person to do when she realizes that the person she so desperately wants to smack is herself? |

Monthly Schmuck
First Britney, now Christina. What’s with the current glut of music videos that trade on soft-porn images? I finally got around to watching Christina Aguillera’s music video, “Dirty”. I’ve seen parts of it before, but didn’t pay much attention.
